Is Bo Peep The Villain In Toy Story 4?

Is Bo Peep The Villain In Toy Story 4?
Bo Peep poster for Toy Story 4

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for a few past Pixar films along with the opening scene of Toy Story 4.

Toy Story 4 is just under three months away, and recently Pixar hasn’t been shy about pulling back the curtain a bit on what to expect from the long-awaited comeback of Andy’s gang of childhood toys. The upcoming animated sequel will also mark the return of Bo Peep, a shiny porcelain sheep-herder who was a loving confidant to Woody up until the studio decidedly cut her out of 2010’s Toy Story 3 – or perhaps just forgot to pencil her in?

Now, Bo Peep seems to be getting her redemption story in Toy Story 4, as the character has traded her bonnet and pink dress for a badass (but still feminine) take on her character. This includes her wearing pantaloons, a pink bow and using her crook as a powerful weapon instead of a mere accessory as she shows Woody around her new way of life, which seems to be between an antique store and lively carnival. She certainly has a prominent presence in the marketing for Toy Story 4 thus far, and now there's been speculation that this is because she is being developed into the next Toy Story villain.

But could Bo Peep really be the crook (pun intended) that Woody, Buzz and the gang will ultimately face in Toy Story 4? I certainly think there's a good case for it! Time to break this theory down.

Bo Peep is introduced in the first Toy Story film as a porcelain doll who is part of a lamp belonging to Andy’s sister, Molly. This already makes her a bit of an outsider to the other toys, but she is often used as a “damsel in distress” to Woody’s adventures during play time. The pair share an undeniable connection with one another, as she’s often thought of as Woody’s love interest. But then, something happens between Toy Story 2 and 3 that makes Bo Peep disappear from the cast of characters in the animated franchise.

Perhaps she is given away? That seems to be the way Toy Story 4 will fill in the gaps in the beginning of the film (which was recently shown at CinemaCon). The story will be set up by showing Woody and Bo Peep’s final exchange before they reunite in the upcoming movie, which includes her telling Woody that she’s okay with being given away and her asking him to come with her. He doesn’t, as his loyalty stays with Andy, though Toy Story 3 famously ends with the now-college-aged lad giving his childhood toys away to a toddler named Bonnie, who they belong to in the new movie.

Toy Story 4 will see Woody getting separated by Bonnie when he runs after her new craft project, Forky, who is having an existential crisis about his purpose. As Woody tries to rescue Forky and bring him back to Bonnie, they will come across Bo Peep. She will introduce Woody to her new lifestyle as someone who has taken control of her narrative as a toy, who roams freely without the need of one child and seems to help other forgotten toys find a home without an “Andy” to call their own. She seems to tempt Woody to adopt this life as well and the movie seems to center on a decision for him to either stay with her or again remain loyal to his kid.

Bo Peep has already been rejected before by Woody, so what if she’s not willing to take no for an answer this time? What starts off as her giving him the illusion of choice by using persuading words like “sometimes change can be good” and “kids lose their toys everyday” (which she utters in the trailer) is actually entrapment. Her story arc could easily become an origin story of the next Toy Story villain. As the other toys go out to save Woody, maybe they end up needing to confront and rescue Bo Peep. It would be the ultimate showdown if the last installment of Toy Story revolved around Woody and the gang face off with a character they love and once called a friend from the past.

The Toy Story franchise is certainly no stranger to pulling the old friend-turned-foe switcheroo. In the second film, Stinky Pete was painted as a new friend to Woody before he tried to force him and Jessie to be shipped off to a toy museum in Japan. This formula was used again in the third movie when the once welcoming Lotso tried to keep the toys from going home in order to keep them safe in the confines of the preschool, where they wouldn't be given away or replaced. Based on this track record, when toys face abandonment, something seriously cracks, and we know Bo Peep has received this treatment already.

Pixar has used this plotline in two other of their recent releases too! In Coco, Ernesto de la Cruz is introduced as Miguel’s hero, but winds up being the film’s villain, and in Incredibles 2 Evelyn is set up to be on the heroes' side before being revealed as the movie’s main baddie as well. Would Pixar dare use this familiar formula for its third release in a row? I think it’s certainly a possibility!

The villain that seems to be set up in Toy Story 4, a doll named Gabby Gabby, just doesn’t seem to hold as much emotional weight to the toys as Bo Peep would as a villain. Plus, her tragic backstory has already been revealed. She’s a vintage doll that was manufactured with a broken voice box and she has some creepy ventriloquist dummies who do her bidding. This story certainly has the makings of a sinister evil plot - such as attempting to steal away Woody’s working one so she can be finally loved by a child perhaps?

But it’s actually more predictable than Bo Peep’s potential as a villain because we don’t know yet what happened to her between Toy Story 2 and today. That’s 20 years of backstory we may learn and could play a bigger role in the story, then what’s being revealed by Pixar. Even if I’m right, Toy Story 4 could still be a really interesting and unique addition to the franchise, and there could still be a ton we don’t know about where it goes.

We of course won’t know for sure until Toy Story 4 hits theaters on June 21. What do you think? Do you think this theory will play out in any way in the upcoming sequel. Feel free to tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

See Mark Hamill's Chucky Terrorize Andy In Child's Play Clip

June 21 brings two tales of toys to theater screens. In one, Andy’s former toy Woody reunites with an old flame and goes on an adventure to bring a fellow toy back to its kid. In the other, a different Andy discovers that not all toys have such good intentions and childhood games can quickly become nightmares. Take a look below to see Mark Hamill’s Chucky terrorizing Andy in a clip from the new Child’s Play.

Mark Hamill may be best known for playing Luke Skywalker, but here he shows why he is such an accomplished voice actor. Even though we don’t see Chucky in the scene, just through his voice Mark Hamill conveys all of Chucky’s feigned innocence, his true malice and the pleasure he derives from terrorizing poor Andy. This game of Hide-and-Seek is like a cat playing with its terrified food.

Gabriel Bateman’s Andy is super freaked out, frightened and confused by the whole thing, but he puts on a brave face and even picks up a weapon hoping to protect himself. But a wooden bat is a weapon for a more simplistic foe, and Chucky is playing on a different level. This becomes clear to Andy when the TV shows Andy’s feet and the look on his face changes from one of determination in the face of fear to one that says ‘oh shit.’

The whole clip, and the premise of this new Child’s Play, feels like something out of an episode of Black Mirror. Chucky is a toy with smart functionality and he’s able to connect with all the other seemingly innocuous smart household devices that we interact with and allow to listen to us, watch us and control our surroundings. It makes his presence near ubiquitous and gives him a level of omnipotence.

This all makes escaping Chucky far more difficult than simply outrunning a two-foot doll. Maybe older generations really did have it better just using their imaginations and playing with sticks and rocks.

This trailer continues the trend of the marketing so far for Child’s Play by largely focusing on Chucky’s voice versus actually showing the killer doll. CinemaBlend’s own Mike Reyes has wondered about this approach and if we need to see more of Chucky, and although that may be the case, I think less is more works here for this clip.

Mark Hamill’s brilliant voice performance and the premise of the scene put us in Andy’s shoes, where Chucky is more dangerous specifically because we can’t see him. We'll have to wait and see how the film doles out looks at Chucky once he turns evil, but for now, Child's Play is taking a Jaws approach, showing us just enough of the threat to build suspense and tease it out.

Child’s Play opens in theaters on June 21. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule to keep track of all the biggest movies headed to theaters this summer.

MoviePass Has Brought Unlimited Back But With A Bunch Of Restrictions

MoviePass Has Brought Unlimited Back But With A Bunch Of Restrictions
La La Land

If you’re an avid movie fan who wants to see everything from the smallest indies to the biggest blockbusters in theater, MoviePass’ unlimited plan where you could see 1 movie a day for $10 a month, was like a dream come true. That unlimited plan was one of the casualties of MoviePass’ tumultuous 2018, that saw it struggle financially and make frequent changes to its offerings. Now MoviePass has brought unlimited back…with a bunch of restrictions.

MoviePass’ new unlimited plan is dubbed MoviePass Uncapped and on the surface it looks a lot like the unlimited plan that rocketed the service to millions of subscribers. MoviePass Uncapped offers subscribers an unlimited number of 2D movie screenings each month (no repeat viewings) for $19.95 a month. But for a limited time, if you pay for a full year in advance, that price comes down to $9.95 a month or about $120 for the year.

So basically, if you pay the year upfront, you are getting the same attractive price that made MoviePass such a disruptive service in the first place. However, if you are wary of the service and don’t want to commit for a full year, you can still take advantage of a discounted rate of $14.95 a month for a limited time.

Once that limited time offer expires (it was not announced when that will be) the plans go back up to $19.95 for month-to-month and $14.95 a month for the annual plan. It sounds like a pretty good deal for moviegoers but being a great deal is what saw MoviePass burning through cash like the Joker burns through mob money, so there are a bunch of caveats.

As reported by TechCrunch, MoviePass’ announcement includes several notable restrictions that will presumably help it to stay afloat. For one, the best deal on the Uncapped plan, where you get unlimited movie tickets for $9.95 a year when paid in advance, requires subscribers to pay via e-check or automated clearinghouse. This would theoretically cut down on credit card processing fees for MoviePass, but the ACH option would require subscribers to give the service their bank account information.

In addition and probably the most eyebrow-raising restriction is that with the Uncapped plan, MoviePass reserves the right to limit your movie selection based on the movie title, your theater choice, the day and showtime and the individual’s historical usage. You may be restricted if your individual use negatively impacts the capacity and availability of the service for other subscribers.

So if you are the kind of person who want’s to really take advantage of this unlimited plan, you may find that there is a cap to how many movies you can see with the Uncapped plan. MoviePass is endeavoring for more transparency this time around though and is very upfront about these potential restrictions on the company’s website.

Another caveat is that you’ll only be able to reserve tickets for a movie three hours before showtime and once you’ve reserved your tickets, you need to check in at the theater between 10 and 30 minutes before the film starts. This new plan also replaces the three-tiers of plans MoviePass introduced in December as part of the brand’s relaunch, although those who already signed up for those can keep them.

To try and combat fraud, the new terms of service also will still require ticket verification. Location services on the app will also be used to validate the location of the theater to confirm that you are using the service yourself. Apparently this will be used at the start of the movie and during its runtime to verify you are there. How that will work if you turn off your phone during a movie is unclear.

As always, MoviePass’ latest move comes with more questions than answers and we’ll have to wait and see how it works out in practice. Will subscribers be constantly locked out from seeing the movies they want (Avengers: Endgame?) and wether or not this plan is financially sustainable are the two biggest things that come to mind.

Still, despite the many restrictions and uncertainty, if the Uncapped plan works like you would hope, it could be a great deal. Even without the discounts, the $20 a month price point is right around what AMC Stubs A-List costs and this gets you more movies, albeit not 3D or premium showings. That makes it a solid value if you want to see a lot of movies, the big unknown is whether or not MoviePass will let you.

No matter how you pay for movies, there are plenty worth seeing this year. Check them out in our 2019 Release Schedule.

What Marvel’s War Machine Movie Would Have Been About, According To Don Cheadle

What Marvel’s War Machine Movie Would Have Been About, According To Don Cheadle
War Machine in Infinity War

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a massive franchise. Marvel Studios revolutionized serialized storytelling, and introduced a massive pool of iconic characters. Avengers: Endgame will mark the 22nd installment in the property, but there are a few movies that never came to fruition over the last decade of filmmaking. No, I'm not talking about the ill-fated Inhumans flick, but a War Machine movie starring Don Cheadle.

Joe Robert Cole wrote the screenplay for Black Panther, but was originally tasked with penning an Iron Man spinoff for War Machine. Ultimately it got scrapped, but now we've got an idea regarding what the movie could have been. Don Cheadle himself recently opened up about the possible blockbuster, saying:

There was definitely going to be a lot of tension between his job as a military man and his allegiances to the code that he swore an oath to uphold, versus the changing world. I think they probably would have run afoul of each other a little bit, but I don’t know if he would have been a straight fugitive, or if he would have become decommissioned. But there was definitely going to be some tension between those two worlds.

Does anyone else have some serious FOMO right now? Because the War Machine movie sounds like an interesting an unique blockbuster for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Furthermore, it seems to tease the conflict that would eventually split the heroes in Captain America: Civil War. Do superheroes have the ability to work outside the law?

Don Cheadle's comments to EW are sure to illicit a mix of emotions from fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On one hand, it's exciting to get a glimpse into the development process of Marvel Studios, and see how things are constantly in motion. But considering how cool Cheadle's description of the doomed project is, there are no doubt cinephiles who are bummed War Machine's spinoff never happened.

War Machine has had an interesting tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, serving as a recurring supporting character alongside others like Black Widow and Falcon. Rhodes actually debuted back in 2007 with Iron Man, played by Terrence Howard. Howard ultimately dropped out after having fiscal differences with the studio, and Cheadler replaced him in Iron Man 2, which was also the movie where Rhodey became War Machine for the very first time.

According to earlier reports, this was when a War Machine was tossed around at the studio. Joe Robert Cole explained this process over a year ago, stating Iron Man 3 as the reason why the movie never got the green lit. As he told it:

At that meeting, they also said they were thinking of doing a War Machine movie. I pitched a concept and won that job to write the script but they decided, based on what Iron Man 3 was going to be, they weren't going to do War Machine anymore.

Talk about a bummer. While fans would no doubt have loved to see War Machine take the spotlight in his own solo movie, he never really got the chance. Instead, he'd reprise his role in Iron Man 3, Captain America: Civil War, as well as the Avengers movies.

War Machine ultimately survived Thanos' snap in Avengers: Infinity War, and he'll presumably have a meaty role with the rest of the survivors in Endgame.

You can catch him return to theaters when Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters on April 26th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

New Avengers: Endgame Clip Reveals Another Dusted Character

New Avengers: Endgame Clip Reveals Another Dusted Character
Captain Marvel looking at the fallen

We’re almost a year removed from Avengers: Infinity War and like the Avengers themselves, we are still tallying the losses from The Decimation wrought by Thanos. Thanks to the posters for Avengers: Endgame, we recently learned that Shuri is indeed among the fallen, and the Avengers will not be able to rely on her brilliance for the war to come. Now a new clip for the upcoming film has revealed that another character, one we haven’t seen in a while, was dusted: Stellan SkarsgĂ¥rd’s Dr. Erik Selvig. Take a look:

We’ve seen a bunch of shots like this in the marketing for Avengers: Endgame, where the various surviving heroes look at images of all the missing and dead friends and teammates who fell during Infinity War. As you can see on the left of this screenshot, the new clip from Avengers: Endgame shows that Dr. Erik Selvig, the astrophysicist from the Thor films, has also been reduced to dust.

We last saw Dr. Selvig in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where he was one of the team members working at the new Avengers facility in Upstate New York. There he, along with his team of scientists, was presumably working to help the Avengers and the world protect itself against new threats. As Captain Marvel is being shown in the screenshot above and we now see, his mind and knowledge will not be on available to aid the Avengers this time around.

It’s been so long since we’ve seen him that you might have forgotten about Dr. Selvig, but the revelation of his dusting just reminds us that he was a part of this world and the scope of what Thanos did. All the characters we’ve met over the years of the MCU that were still alive at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War were subject to the indiscriminate culling of The Decimation.

With all that said, here’s where things get interesting. We thought Dr. Erik Selvig was alive. The human trio of the first Thor film, Stellan SkarsgĂ¥rd’s Dr. Selvig, Kat Dennings’ Darcy Lewis and Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, all seemed to have survived the snap because they all appear in the novel Avengers: Infinity War: The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath.

That book by Brandon T. Snider is about the aftermath of The Decimation. In it, Dr. Selvig and Darcy set out to find and understand the cause of the devastation and in their quest they are aided by Jane Foster. The three are dubbed the “Science Avengers.” So, how can Dr. Selvig be dead in this clip from Avengers: Endgame if he is one of the main characters in an entire book set after Avengers: Infinity War?

One possibility is that Dr. Selvig is only presumed dead. I’m sure with over 3 billion people snapped out of existence at once, it would take a while to know for sure who is and isn’t still alive. We’ve also seen the Avengers looking at an image of Scott Lang in these kinds of scenes in the trailers so they can be wrong. Of course, he was in the Quantum Realm.

We also know that Marvel is totally willing to add footage and change things and design the trailers to throw us off so that we don’t know too much when we see the film. That could be a possibility here, but that effort for a character we haven’t seen in an entire Phase would seem unnecessary.

I don’t know that we’ll get a firm answer that clears up this disparity, but if I were to guess, I would say that sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one. This is just a book and I don’t think Marvel is super concerned about the canonical complications from it. The movies are what takes precedence and are the official canon. We see this in Star Wars too, where the books are supposed to be canon, but their level of tie-in with the new films has amounted to a few Easter eggs at best.

So I think we can probably count Dr. Selvig among those hoping for an undusting until we hear otherwise. You can check out the new clip with Dr. Selvig’s digital headstone in the video below.

Avengers: Endgame arrives on April 26. Check out our 2019 release schedule to keep track of all the biggest movies coming this year.

John Boyega Calls Finn's Episode IX Relationship Status A 'Love Pentagon'

John Boyega Calls Finn's Episode IX Relationship Status A 'Love Pentagon'
Finn in The Rise of Skywalker

It's a very exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. Once Disney acquired Lucasfilm, the House of Mouse began churning out content like a well-oiled machine. Standalone films and the upcoming live-action series The Mandalorian break new ground for the franchise, while main installments continue the Skywalker Saga. The last eight movies will come to a head when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters, and fans are eager to see the beloved characters' fates.

While both Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill will reprise their roles in The Rise of Skywalker, the film will likely focus on the trio of new heroes. This includes John Boyega's Finn, who is shown rocking some new duds in the film's first trailer. There's been plenty of talk amongst the fandom regarding who Finn might end up with romantically, with the options even including Poe Dameron. Boyega recently described Finn's relationship status in Episode IX, saying:

You add Poe in there as well, there's a love triangle. Very complicated. We've got a few aliens that've been looking at Finn a certain type of way, so I don't know if you want to add their names to the list. Yeah, it's a love pentagon, man. There’s a lot going on. I think he is [the most eligible bachelor in the galaxy] period. Finn is single and willing to mingle.

Is there Tinder in space? John Boyega had a good sense of humor about Finn's romantic possibilities, and and he seems to admit there's a ton of options available. Lucky him.

John Boyega's comments come from the Episode IX panel at Star Wars Celebration. Finn was shown in the past two films sharing romantic scenes with a few characters. While he pined for Rey in The Force Awakens, he also forged a connection to Rose Tico in The Last Jedi. Plus, there's the long standing fan theories about Finn and Poe's relationship-- one that Boyega and Oscar Isaac are happy to add fuel to.

Excluding Poe from the equation, it should be interesting to see if Finn ends up forging a relationship with either Rey or Rose in The Rise of Skywalker. While he was originally head over heels for Daisy Ridley's character, he shared a kiss with Rose on Crait in the most recent movie. During the same panel at Star Wars Celebration, Boyega went on to address Finn/Rose, saying:

She my girl. There's nice chemistry. It's in the middle of a war, we're trying to figure ourselves out. We love you one day, don't love you the next. It's a very distracting place to fall in love.

Well, that's cryptic. John Boyega has learned how to avoid spoilers during his tenure in the Star Wars franchise, so he's become adept at answering questions without giving too much away. Love has always been a theme in the galaxy far, far away, with the previous two trilogies containing epic love stories with Han/Leia and Anakin/Padme. By comparison, the current set of films has bee missing this aspect of storytelling, so we'll see how it all ends up once The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters.

Kelly Marie Tran is back playing Rose Tico in Episode IX, after being the target of intense online harassment which ultimately resulted in her leaving social media. When Tran was asked if she'd share a kiss with John Boyega in the upcoming blockbuster, she said:

All I'll say is Finn is a very eligible bachelor.

It looks like Finn will have a few suitors in The Rise of Skywalker, which proves one thing: it pays to leave The First Order. You might be facing insurmountable odds as a Resistance Member, but at least you'll meet other singles in the galaxy.

Answers will arrive once Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

The 25 Most Emotional Moments In Avengers: Endgame

The 25 Most Emotional Moments In Avengers: Endgame
Hawkeye teaching archery to his daughter

Warning: Based on the box office, the entire world saw Avengers: Endgame this weekend, but if you somehow didn’t, click on one of our other fine stories because the spoileriest of SPOILERS are contained within!

In pop culture’s most emotionally exhausting weekend ever, Avengers: Endgame delivered all the emotional wallop that we’ve been predicting and expecting for years. Avengers: Endgame was billed as a culmination; a definitive ending to The Infinity Saga story that we have been following since 2008. That finality meant that no one, at least none of the original six Avengers, was safe, and being that we’ve invested so much time with these characters, the potential for tears was high.

Avengers: Endgame did not disappoint on this front and the only gauntlet more powerful than the infinity, is the emotional one this movie puts you through. With that in mind, here are the 25 of the most emotional moments in Avengers: Endgame.

Hawkeye Losing His Family

We saw a lot of people die at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, but there was one set of deaths saved for the very beginning of Avengers: Endgame. This climactic film barely gave you time to get adjusted in your seat before it hit you with the emotional gut punch of Hawkeye losing his family (as I predicted, by the way). While on house arrest, Clint Barton was enjoying time with his family, teaching his daughter archery, unaware of the war raging in Wakanda. Then, suddenly his wife and kids were all gone and his whole world with them.

Message For Pepper

This moment was partially shown in the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame, but that didn’t take away from its emotional impact in the film. Tony Stark, far from home, with no hope of rescue and a clock rapidly ticking down to his death, uses some of his remaining time to send a message to his one true love, Pepper Potts. Their relationship is the longest in the MCU and Pepper was the one person who could turn Tony Stark from playboy to husband. His sweet and loving message in this moment is testament to that.

Rocket And Nebula Holding Hands

The Decimation was particularly devastating for the Guardians, who had already lost Gamora and were whittled down to only Rocket Raccoon and Nebula. Rocket was left on Earth alone, surrounded by strangers, with no way to know if his adoptive family was simply missing or gone with half of the rest of the universe. And it was particularly sad for Nebula, who has yearned for love and acceptance for so long to lose her sister and her friends. So when Captain Marvel returns Nebula to Earth, the reunion between her and Rocket where they hold hands was beautiful and touching.

Tony’s Breakdown

We heard that Captain America: Civil War should be part of any MCU re-watch prep before Endgame, and this moment makes it clear why. The rift formed in that film was deep and long-lasting. When Tony is rescued from space and returns to Avengers HQ, he has a breakdown and basically blames Cap for not being there when he needed him. Tony Stark is in pain, unable to process his grief and lashing out to try and assign blame for what happened. It’s tough to watch, but it rings true for these characters after the events of Civil War.

The Stones Are Gone

When going to get Thanos on his garden retirement planet, Cap says that he doesn’t know what he’s going to do if it doesn’t work. Then it doesn’t. The Avengers easily subdue Thanos, but he reveals that he reduced the Infinity Stones to atoms to prevent temptation for them to be used again. Thor finally goes for the head, but it doesn’t matter. Thanos still won. This moment is, for the time being, the complete loss of hope, with the faintest glimmer snuffed out due to Thanos and his inevitability and it leaves the heroes reeling for five years.

The Support Group

In HBO’s The Leftovers, the characters are struggling to move on, to find hope in their grief at the loss of 2% of the world’s population. In Endgame, 50% of all life has been extinguished and we see how emotionally wrecked the survivors are. Here, co-director Joe Russo cameos as a man who lost his partner to the snap. He talks about how difficult it is to begin living again and to open himself up to love after having it ripped away from him. It is sad, but also hopeful as he says he’s going on another date.

Black Widow Tearfully Carrying On

I think it’s safe to say that the original six Avengers saved the best for last when it comes to many of their performances, and that rings especially true for Scarlett Johansson. After the time jump, Black Widow is still carrying on, trying to keep the world safe because that is all she knows how to do and it seems like she thinks she owes it to everyone. It’s a lonely position and we see that weariness on her face. And when Rhodey tells her about what Clint has been doing, you can see and feel her grief and heartbreak.

"I Love You 3000"

As audiences began seeing Avengers: Endgame and expressing their gratitude to Marvel Studios, the Russo Brothers and the Avengers themselves, one of the common refrains was “I love you 3000.” These are the words Tony Stark’s daughter Morgan says to him in the film. In a sweet moment in Morgan’s bedroom, we see that Tony Stark, once the last person in the world who should be a father, has become a great one. It’s love we all hope to have in our lives, and this love drives Tony’s desire to maintain the present in the rest of the film.

Scott Finds Cassie Alive

When Scott Lang emerges from the Quantum Realm and enters a world that is unlike the one he left, he sees monuments to all the people who died in the snap. It’s a moment of sheer terror and dread as he looks, hoping not to see his daughter Cassie’s name. It’s like when you hear a friend or family member got in an accident and are fearful of the worst. So when he knocks on the door and finds Cassie alive and much older than when he left her, a wave of relief washes over him and us.

"Don’t Give Me Hope"

After a really cool sequence of Ronin killing a bunch of people, Natasha finally finds him. She sees what the loss of his family has done to him and he tells her she shouldn’t be there, almost embarrassed and not wanting her to see him like this. When she tells him there’s a chance to undo it, he responds with the devastating “Don’t give me hope.” It’s heartbreaking to see how he has lost so much that he doesn’t even want to think about getting it back because the pain will be far too great if it doesn’t work.

Tony And Cap Reconciling

It sucks to have to choose sides and to see two people whom you both care about fighting. So when Tony races up to Avengers HQ to offer his services, the wounds of the past begin to heal. Tony mentions not wanting to have resentment and he returns Steve Rogers’ shield to him. They reconcile, finally ending their civil war and moving forward as friends and teammates as they were always meant to be. It’s incredibly heartwarming to see these two pillars of the MCU finally together again, not only fighting the same enemies, but being on the same team.

Rocket Talking About His Family

Rocket Raccoon is quietly one of the most tragic characters in the MCU, and we see that again in Avengers: Endgame. When on the mission to Asgard to get the Reality Stone, Rocket has to snap Thor out of his malaise, and to do that, the sweet rabbit shrugs off his hardened exterior to talk about his family, the Guardians, how they’re gone and how much it means to him to get them back. The family you choose is just as important to the family you’re born into, and hearing how much the Guardians mean to Rocket is quite moving.

Thor And Frigga

Leave it to Avengers: Endgame to somehow make Thor: The Dark World, considered by many to be the MCU’s worst movie, so much more meaningful to the character in hindsight. At this point, Thor has lost Loki, Odin, Frigga and half his people, arguably more than any other Avenger. So for him to get to see his mother Frigga again, and to finally get some sort of goodbye is extremely moving. Her motherly wisdom helps him to find a path forward, to become who he is and who he is meant to be, not who inheritance and title dictate.

Tony Talking To His Father

All the best superheroes have daddy issues, and that adage holds true for Tony Stark. The genius’ relationship with his father has always been complicated and it is only after Howard is gone that Tony is able to understand him, appreciate what he gave and forgive him his mistakes. When Tony and Steve go back to the '70s and Tony sees his father again, he is able to have the kind of conversation with his father he never could before. Tony ends up imparting some wisdom to Howard and basically tells his dad thanks and that he loves him.

Steve Looking At Peggy Carter

Duty has always had to come before love and personal happiness for Steve Rogers. That’s just who he is, but sometimes it is harder than others. That’s what happens when Steve is in the past in Peggy Carter's office. She is right there, the love of his life is just feet away, and all that separates them is glass. And yet he cannot go to her and his longing is palpable. It is incredibly sad because it seems to him, and us in that moment, that that’s as close as they’ll ever come again.

Black Widow’s Death

Before Endgame, the smart money was on Tony or Cap dying, and with her own solo film on the way, Black Widow was not an obvious candidate. But the Soul Stone exacts the ultimate price, and that lead to one of the film’s most emotional moments. Natasha, the torchbearer for the Avengers, willing to do whatever it takes, and Clint, the broken man, wanting his death to mean something, battled each other for the right to die. We didn’t want either to win, and when Black Widow kicks off the cliff and Hawkeye screams in agony, we feel his pain.

Nebula And Rhodey

This was a great movie for Karen Gillan’s Nebula as we got to see even more of how tragic she is as a character. In a surprising and emotional moment with Rhodey, she tells him that she wasn’t always like this, lamenting the artificial enhancements forced upon her when she wasn’t good enough. Rhodey, who now requires mechanical assistance due to his injuries, empathizes and tells her that they work with what they got. It was a beautiful kindness that showed that it’s not flesh and blood and bone that makes someone human (or Luphomoid), but actions and choices.

Call From Laura Barton

After losing Black Widow, the Avengers needed the plan to work so that her sacrifice would mean something. After they craft a gauntlet, Bruce snaps his fingers and there is a moment of uncertainty. Then, we hear Clint Barton’s phone and see that it is his wife Laura calling. As he’s picking it up, you can see that he allows hope to creep back in, but it is paired with trepidation, fearful of the possibility that that hope could yet be dashed. The relief on Hawkeye’s face as he picks it up and hears his wife’s voice is super moving.

Cap Is Worthy

Not all of the emotional moments in this film are sad; some fill your heart with happiness and make you pump your fist in excitement. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, we got the first inkling that Steve Rogers was worthy to wield Mjolnir, and in one of Avengers: Endgame’s most crowd-pleasing moments, we find out for sure. Thor’s “I knew it” is a great callback drowned out by theater cheers and then we see Cap, taking on Thanos with his shield and Mjolnir in a moment that elicits one pure emotion: glee.

Avengers Assemble!

The first 11 years of the MCU have built to this film and the entire history of comic book movies feels like it built to this moment. After Cap stands alone against Thanos and his horde, the cavalry comes in. All the snapped characters have returned to the fight, and this emotional moment sends serious chills down your spine. And when we finally, after nearly two dozen movies, get to hear “Avengers Assemble!” as Cap stands with all the heroes of the MCU in an image out of a comic, the only tears shed are ones of joy.

Tony Hugging Peter

Tony Stark has always been one to opt for jokes and snark over sincere affection, and that was the case with his protege Peter Parker. But when Peter Parker fell to Thanos, it wrecked Iron Man in a way no one’s death save Pepper’s could. Peter was perhaps the person that made Tony want kids and the person that made him join the Time Heist. So when Peter is brought back and Tony gives him a genuine hug in the middle of battle, showing his love for him, it is one of the film’s most heartwarming moments.

Star-Lord Seeing Gamora Again

We all assumed that somehow, the victims of the snap in Avengers: Infinity War would be returned to life in Endgame. But things were less certain for Gamora, who was killed prior to the snap. And ultimately, the Gamora we knew is still dead. But for Peter Quill, just seeing her again, even if she didn’t know him or the history and love they shared, gave him hope that neither time nor space nor death could keep them apart. He got an unfortunate knee for his trouble, but now he gets to fall in love with her all over again.

Tony Stark’s Death And Funeral

Tony Stark started the MCU and he’s the character that we’ve spent the most time with, so his death and funeral elicited quite a few sniffles in the theater. From Peter Parker telling him he would be okay to Pepper letting him know that her and Morgan would be all right, it was tough to hold back the tears. Then the film delivered a scene out of a comic, as all the characters of the MCU attended the funeral for Earth’s greatest protector, who sacrificed himself to ensure victory. It was hauntingly beautiful and a sorrowful ending to the battle.

Cap Passing His Shield To Sam

We’ve long wondered what would happen once Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers hung up the shield and if he would pass it off to either Sam or Bucky as he has done in the comics. The Winter Soldier deferred to Sam and an old Cap passed his shield on to Falcon, in whom Cap saw the heart required to wield it. It was an incredible show of trust and belief, and although Falcon was grateful, there was also a bit of sadness, because wielding the shield meant that Steve no longer would, making the whole thing bittersweet.

Steve And Peggy Get Their Dance

While there is some grumbling about the can of worms this ending opens, it cannot be denied that it is perfect on a thematic and emotional level. Cap has always been a man out of time. He's able to find purpose, but not true happiness; not a real life in modern times. So it is a beautiful and emotional ending for him to find peace by returning to the past to live the life he missed out on and finally collect on that rain check for a dance with Peggy Carter.
