Emilia Clarke Almost Appeared In Iron Man 3

Emilia Clarke Almost Appeared In Iron Man 3
Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones

With credits on her resume like Game of Thrones, Terminator Genisys and Solo: A Star Wars Story, Emilia Clarke has become a well-known actress in the Hollywood sphere, but one thing she has yet to do is appear in a superhero movie. That said, apparently she almost had the chance to do so with 2013’s Iron Man 3.

Iron Man 3 co-writer Drew Pearce recently shared a picture of a name card showing that during an early table read for the movie in 2012, he was reading for JARVIS, the role that belonged to Paul Bettany before he became The Vision. However, the bigger reveal in this Instagram post was that Emilia Clarke was present for this table read alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle.

As for why Emilia Clarke didn’t end up appearing in Iron Man 3, Drew Pearce simply said:

long story, the script changed

Drew Pearce didn’t specify exactly when in 2012 this Iron Man 3 table read occurred, but filming began in May 23, so we can assume that these actors gathered together at least several weeks beforehand. At that point in time, Game of Thrones Season 1 had already been long out and Season 2 was either about to premiere or was a few episodes deep, so Emilia Clarke had taken her first steps to stardom, and Iron Man 3 surely would have propelled her further.

Alas, sometimes a story is altered even after folks have been cast, and while Drew Pearce didn’t provide any additional information on Emilia Clarke’s involvement in Iron Man 3, ultimately she had to depart the project. While it is interesting to imagine what Iron Man 3 would have been like had Clarke appeared, clearly her career didn’t suffer or stall as a result of not taking part in it.

Obviously the big question is who Emilia Clarke would have played in Iron Man 3, but there’s another thing to consider. Drew Pearce said Clarke had to depart because the script changed, so was she playing a character cut from the movie or was she playing someone that still showed up in the finalized story and she was simply recast.

Looking at the version of Iron Man 3 released to the public, there were only two primary characters, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts and Rebecca Hall’s Maya Hansen, plus Stephanie Szostak getting some screen time as Extremis-powered henchwoman Ellen Brandt. Maybe Clarke was the original actress to play Maya Hansen, back when the character had a bigger role in the movie? It’s also possible that Clarke was the original actress tapped to play Ellen Brandt, although even though she wasn’t nearly as famous back then, that seems like it would have been too small a role for her.

I’m more inclined to think that Emilia Clarke was tapped to appear in Iron Man 3 as a character who was removed from the story, meaning that there’s no shortage of possibilities about who this individual was. One fan noted how on Drew Pearce’s post that Emilia Clarke had auditioned to play Sharon Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and wondered if the character was supposed to show up in Iron Man 3 first, to which Pearce responded, “Good guess but no.”

In any case, Emilia Clarke missed out on appearing in Iron Man 3, but that doesn’t mean she won’t get another opportunity to appear in another superhero movie down the line. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has plenty of movies coming up that Clarke could score a leading role in. Or, maybe she could follow in the footsteps of Game of Thrones costar Jason Momoa and hop to the DC Extended Universe instead. We’ll just have to wait and see.

With Game of Thrones now over, Emilia Clarke will appear next in Netflix’s Last Christmas. As for the MCU, Avengers: Endgame is still going strong in theaters and Spider-Man: Far From Home will wrap up Phase 3 on July 2.

How Much Did Robert Downey Jr., Chris Pratt, Scarlett Johansson And The Other Cast Members Make From Avengers: Endgame

How Much Did Robert Downey Jr., Chris Pratt, Scarlett Johansson And The Other Cast Members Make From Avengers: Endgame
Avengers: Endgame Promotional Material

There is a very good chance that you've seen Avengers: Endgame by now. The mega-blockbuster is smashing box office records left and right, and it's well on its way to becoming the highest grossing movie of all-time —domestically and globally — even though it has been in theaters for only a little over two weeks now. It is the cumulation of 22 movies-and-counting inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Phase Three will continue in earnest with July's Spider-Man: Far From Home. In short, the Marvel brand is a money-making machine, and Endgame's payday won't slow down soon.

Now the dust is starting to settle (no unfortunate pun intended, Thanos), and the movie is currently playing in thousands of theaters all around the world, it's time to reflect on the series as a whole and evaluate the star power of some of the franchise's most distinctive actors and actresses, including the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Chris Pratt. The whole Avengers series is winding down, at least as far as we know it, and the folks who have seen the film can attest the franchise wouldn't be the same now that the credits have rolled on Avengers: Endgame. Nevertheless, with this humungous movie making all kinds of cash at the box office, let's take a look at the paydays for some of its primary performers, and how they were wrestled the amount of money they made through their work.

Also, it should be noted that we were very cautious to not dive our toes into serious spoiler territory. However, if you haven't seen the film yet and you are fearful for anything being revealed in this article (especially with the Russo brothers declaring that the ban on spoilers has been lifted), you should know that there might be a few minor spoilers to be found in this article. So, check out the film already, and learn more about the business side below.

How Much Did Robert Downey Jr. Make For Playing Iron Man?

Having started the whole enterprise with 2008's Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. has been at the root of the Marvel Cinematic Universe from the very beginning -- the very first scene of the franchise, in fact. And with his star-renewing role in that acclaimed film, Downey Jr. found himself with a second career in the superhero franchise, leading to nine film appearances in total throughout the past 11 years. (Ten, in fact, if you count his brief cameo in 2008's The Incredible Hulk.) In many respects, Robert Downey Jr. became the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And with his final cinematic appearance in the MCU, Robert Downey Jr. made sure that he received a whole lot of moolah for his work in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

According to estimations from THR, Robert Downey Jr. is believed to have made somewhere in the ballpark of $75 million for his final appearance as Tony Stark. That appears to be counting backends and specifically-worded phrasing in his contracts, but it's clear the A-list actor took full advantage of his clout and notoriety in this extensive franchise when it came time to say goodbye to his most famous role. It's only fitting that Robert Downey Jr. would make a hell of a lot of money for playing billionaire Tony Stark in this franchise-spanning character, particularly given the early risk with the role. He signed onto Iron Man without knowing what would become of the project. The whole thing was a crapshoot when he first agreed to play the part, and it was only when that first movie exploded that he had lawyers renew his contracts and make the whole thing more beneficial for his bank account. The Marvel Cinematic Universe wouldn't be the same without him, and he drained out every penny he could make from this series when it came time for his triumphant end.

How Much Did Chris Pratt Make For Playing Star Lord?

Once merely known as "The Guy From Parks and Recreation," Chris Pratt became a bonafide movie star when he first appeared in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. Easily among the most profitable installments in the extended franchise, and a more sizable box office hit than most people anticipated, there was no denying that Chris Pratt was now in the big leagues thanks to his endearing performance as Star-Lord. And when it came to his work in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, you can bet that the funny man was laughing all the way to the bank with his paycheck.

While his exact budget for the movie is a bit murky, it's believed that Chris Pratt probably made upwards of eight figures for his work in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe team-up films. Though some reports claim that it might've been closer to $5 million. The actor reportedly made $1.5 million for his work on Guardians of the Galaxy, and while he is certainly a big movie star, his appearance in Avengers: Endgame was definitely minor. Most of his screen time was found in Avengers: Infinity War. While he definitely had a few scenes, it wasn't necessarily his movie in many respects. Nevertheless, Chris Pratt will return to the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which should begin production in the next couple years and should theoretically be the actor's most lucrative MCU project to date.

How Much Did Scarlett Johansson Make For Playing Black Widow?

Since her first appearance in Iron Man 2, Scarlett Johansson has continued to boost her star power by appearing as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actress is a bonafide superstar in her own right, but she never quite rose through the ranks as much as some of her fellow co-stars. She doesn't have her own solo movie (yet!), and most of her work in the franchise is found in other actor's films, including Captain America: The Winter Solider. With that noted, while her salary for the Marvel movie isn't known exactly, it's believed that she earned less than her co-stars for her work in Avengers: Endgame.

While Scarlett Johansson's salary isn't quite as high as some people would hope it would be, it appears the actress will make up for the shortage with her own movie, Black Widow, which is expected to hit production within the next year or two. According to early reports from THR, Johansson is expected to make $20 million on the solo feature, which is equal to what Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans earned for their respective appearances in last year's Avengers: Infinity War. So, even though she didn't make as much as her co-stars in Endgame, she'll definitely be getting a big payout soon.

How Much Did Chris Evans Make For Playing Captain America?

Essentially the leader of The Avengers, Captain America has a lot of responsibilities inside the core superhero group. While he didn't have a lot of screen time in Avengers: Infinity War (to the disappointment of beard-lovers everywhere), Captain America played a significant role in this new film. It was his last curtain call in the part, and the final time we are expected to see the actor play the patriotic day-saver — at least, in any major respect.

Sure enough, as arguably the lead of Endgame, the actor was expected to make a lot of money for his work in the latest two Avengers-based films. It was reported that Chris Evans' contract allowed the actor to make upwards of $15-20 million for his appearances in his final two Avengers movies. That's a great deal of cash, but it was probably to be expected. Similar to Robert Downey Jr, it was Cap's last hurrah, and it was expected even before the release of Avengers: Endgame that it would be the very last time we'd see Captain America in the iteration we've come to know and love. The role has grown to be the actor's most famous to date, and while he wasn't able to wrangle as much cash in his contract as Downey Jr., he certainly made a hefty amount of money.

How Much Did Chris Hemsworth Make For Playing Thor?

Among the first actors to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Hemsworth first played the part of Thor in the 2011 film of the same name. And since then, he has become a staple of the Avengers series. While there were a few rough spots (notably, 2013's Thor: The Dark World), the actor found himself on top in the end with his well-received work in Thor: Ragnarok and The Avengers films — including, most notably, Avengers: Endgame, in which he plays a very memorable part of the proceedings.

Sure enough, Chris Hemsworth is one of the highest-paid actors in Avengers: Endgame. It's believed that he made roughly the same amount of money as Chris Evans, in fact. His salary is believed to be between $13-15 million, and that's pretty impressive considering how his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is hopefully going to continue following the events of Endgame. Nevertheless, he's a core member of the MCU, and that commitment to the franchise earned the actor a healthy payday at the end of the day.

How Much Did Bradley Cooper Make For Playing Rocket?

While Bradley Cooper has proven himself in many different respects outside of his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it can be easy to forget that he plays such a crucial role in the expansive universe. In fact, he's so good at embodying the character of Rocket there is a good chance some people don't even know it's his voice! While some folks were weary about his participation in Guardians of the Galaxy when it was first announced that Bradley Cooper was taking on the role, it didn't take long before people grew endeared to the character, and it's safe to say that in many respects, he's the film's beating heart.

In Avengers: Endgame, Rocket Raccoon plays a much more significant part than his fellow Guardians of the Galaxy. Still, despite Bradley Cooper's popularity and the character's primary position in the new film, his salary appears to be less than you would expect for such a high-grade actor, which may have to do with the fact his work is via voice work only and not live action. In any case, Bradley Cooper continues to impress in the role, as he does in many respects throughout his career, and he is a very welcomed and memorable addition to the Avengers team.

How Much Did Tom Holland Make For Playing Spider-Man?

The friendly neighborhood Spider-Man can often seem like the most humble of the group. He is a fresh-faced newcomer who is still left in awe of his fellow world-saving Avengers whenever he makes contact with them, and his plucky spirit and good morality make him a fun, enjoyable and surprisingly fresh screen presence, considering that Tom Holland is now the third actor to play the role in a significant fashion these past 20 years.

When it comes to his earnings for these new Avengers movies, Tom Holland is believed to have made a reported $3 million for his work in Infinity War, and he is expected to make around the same amount of money for his work in Endgame. The actor is certainly on the up-and-up. He made a good impression on folks in Captain America: Civil War, and his first leading role in Spider-Man: Homecoming was a comfortably free and fun-loving performance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With this summer's Spider-Man: Far From Home serving as the official wrap-up for Phase Three, the actor will likely only continue to rise in status in the MCU. And we should expect him to make more money in the future, especially if he's expected to replace Iron Man in a few respects later on down the road.

There was little doubt that Avengers: Endgame would be a monster success at the box office. And with a lot of money spent in this expansive finale-of-sorts, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that many of the primary actors involved wanted to get their fair share of the pie. While it's safe to say that some actors were compensated way more than others, at the end of the day, they are all making a ton of money — either now or at a later date.

Robert Pattinson Read Christopher Nolan's 'Unreal' New Script While Locked In A Room

Robert Pattinson Read Christopher Nolan's 'Unreal' New Script While Locked In A Room
Robert Pattinson in High Life

The prestigious filmmaker behind Inception, the Dark Knight trilogy and, most recently, Dunkirk has another film abrewing and we can’t wait. We literally have no idea what the movie is titled or about, but that hasn’t stopped Christopher Nolan’s next endeavor from becoming one of the most highly-anticipated films.

The untitled Nolan project that has been described as a “massive innovative action blockbuster” will star Twilight’s Robert Pattinson, who recently admitted he already has all the details for the new movie. Here’s what he said:

I got locked in a room to read the script – I don't have it myself. I've been a little wary of doing big movies for years and years, but there's just something about Chris Nolan's stuff. He seems like the only director now who can do what is essentially a very personal, independent movie that has huge scale. I read the script and it's unreal.

Robert Pattinson’s words to USA Today certainly spark some further excitement for Christopher Nolan’s next movie. Since the Twilight franchise, the 32-year-old actor has stuck to independent, arthouse films such as last year’s critically-acclaimed Good Time, but starring in a Nolan movie will certainly place him back into the spotlight in a big way.

Considering the actor’s distaste for the typical big-budget blockbuster, which he no doubt has been offered and turned down, the upcoming Nolan movie seems to have him excited about doing a movie with a lot of eyes on it again. We can’t wait to see the actor take on another high-profile role all these years later.

Robert Pattinson will also be joined by John David Washington and Elizabeth Debicki, from the other casting information released so far. Washington recently led Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman and Debicki is a rising actress who was Ayesha in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and in Steve McQueen’s Widows.

Early reports about Christopher Nolan’s next movie had it pegged as a romantic thriller that would be a cross between North by Northwest in tone meets Inception, though these rumors were debunked by an unnamed source. So fans can expect the unexpected, though there is a certain flavor to Nolan’s filmmaking that has been woven into each of his movies so far, and we assume to see it continue in his next film.

Additionally, Christopher Nolan is known for enlisting Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Michael Caine in a majority of his projects. Will the talents, or any of his other previous collaborators, also find a place in his next movie, or will he break this tradition and go for a completely fresh faces?

Robert Pattinson said he’s “sworn to secrecy” regarding the project, and considering he was literally locked in a room to read the script, Nolan is keeping this one especially under wraps. The movie will begin filming this year and hit theaters on July 17, 2020, back-to-back with a few other highly-anticipated summer releases Morbius and Ghostbusters 3. In the meantime, check out Pattinson’s newest sci-fi drama High Life in select theaters now.

Zack Snyder Reveals Who Was Going To Play Darkseid In The DCEU

Zack Snyder Reveals Who Was Going To Play Darkseid In The DCEU
Darkseid sitting on his throne, hands folded in thought

As time goes on, Zack Snyder’s original vision for Justice League seems to get clearer with each passing revelation. There’s been quite a bit of information that’s come out about what was supposed to happen in the film that eventually became the final product released, and a lot of that information was about potential franchise villain Darkseid. We’ve learned so much about this character, from what his function would have been in the Justice League films to what he would have looked like; and now, we know who would have played him - actor Ray Porter.

Best known for supporting roles in shows like ER and Justified, Porter was going to play the Justice League baddie who was supposed to raise hell towards the end of the first planned film, only to come back in the planned Justice League 2 later. Zack Snyder confirmed this casting through social media, as he posted a photo of Ray Porter, along with captions merely stating, “He’s the man. For Darkseid.”

If the DCEU had stuck to its originally intended path, Darkseid was basically the Thanos of the Justice League story run, as he was searching for an equation that would allow him to control all sentient beings. References were baked in throughout the series of films contemporary to Justice League, with lines and renderings of Darkseid’s visage that have been pointed out by Zack Snyder through his official Vero account. Ray Porter being drafted into the Justice League mix as the actor who would be his cinematic avatar only further confirms that not only was the two film structure scrapped pretty quickly, but the Snyder Cut just might be out there. For reference, take a look at this photo of Porter, below:

Though it may surprise people that Porter’s long-locked look would be chosen for a character that typically is seen with a helmet covering a bald head, Justice League probably would have used some sort of motion capture process to bring the character to life. So Ray Porter could have put on the standard bodysuit with ping pong balls or whatever rig that Zack Snyder would have used to get the look right, and that hair could have been secured and eliminated from the film. Though that hasn’t stopped people from joking about the character taking a rather Aquaman-like approach to his looks, despite the fact that Darkseid is some serious business in the DCEU.

A formidable villain in the DC Comics universe, Darkseid was someone that was being talked about quite heavily ever since the initial clues were placed within Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. With Bruce Wayne dreaming of a nightmarish apocalyptic future, and a massive field with the Omega symbol burned into it, the pump was primed for this villain’s eventual usage towards the end of Justice League’s first part and his eventual full-on baddie status in Justice League 2.

With a fandom further calling for the release of the fabled Snyder Cut, further drips and drabs of information towards the original vision for Justice League’s defunct two-parter seem to only stoke those fires. Whether we’ll get that cut and what further information will come out about the original two part structure of the Justice League film in the future is something that’s open ended, but intensely intriguing.

However, as it stands, Justice League’s final cut is on home video at the moment, with Shazam! being the current DC Comics film in theaters. Though for the record, Ray Porter would make a hell of a relative for Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, should the DCEU want to retain him.

Apparently Netflix Promoted A New Jurassic World Spinoff Too Early

Apparently Netflix Promoted A New Jurassic World Spinoff Too Early
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom T-Rex

Netflix’s algorithm is a funny thing: Between its random sub-genre recommendations such as "absurd opposites-attract comedies" and "dark revenge sci-fi & fantasy," you never know what you’re going to discover while scrolling through the streaming service. Recently, a couple of subscribers noticed a potentially unannounced Jurassic World title while they were in the mood for watching some dinosaur movie goodness. Take a look:

As you can see in the recent tweet from @nsjstuff, the title Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous came up on his search results. According to MovieWeb, after he tweeted this out, fans did some digging and found that Universal had filed three trademarks for this title on entertainment, toys and games in December 2018. While the project has not been officially announced, the studio does already have ties with Netflix and has discussed plans to create more programming around the blockbuster properties.

Netflix has already collaborated with the studio in the past for LEGO Jurassic World: The Indominus Escape, so another project about the Universal property with this newly revealed title is likely on the way as well. The studios also have a Netflix Fast & Furious animated series centering on the adventures of Tony Torretto -- teenage son of Vin Diesel’s Dom -- coming later this year called Fast & Furious: Spy Racers.

Universal’s animation studio has additionally worked with the streaming giant in the past to release a children’s television show based on their highly-successful How To Train Your Dragon franchise. The studios’ previous dealings lead us to believe the upcoming Jurassic World title will also be an animated series or film targeted to a younger audience. Perhaps about a summer camp at the problematic park getting out of hand?

If you look up “Jurassic” on Netflix now, as I just did, the upcoming title no longer appears. Looks like the streaming giant realized its mistake and took down the title from showing up. Maybe Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous is still in early development and not ready to be announced by the studios.

This information does show that Netflix and Universal are in fact working together to create more content about the famous dino park that has sprung a $5 billion global grossing franchise since Steven Spielberg’s classic debuted in 1993.

Besides Jurassic World’s future presence on the streaming platform, Universal Studios is also gearing up to unveil its Jurassic World - The Ride revamp this summer with newly created dinos, scenery, and storyline updating the 23-year-old classic ride. The third installment of the big-screen Jurassic World franchise is also underway for summer 2021 release.

Until then, no need to search for what’s next on Netflix, just check out these great movies coming to the streaming site this April.

Matthew Vaughn Reveals His Scrapped Plans For Man Of Steel 2

Matthew Vaughn Reveals His Scrapped Plans For Man Of Steel 2
Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel

Although the DC Extended Universe franchise is moving forward with numerous movies, including The Batman, The Suicide Squad and Aquaman 2, one character who’s still languishing in limbo is Superman. While he was resurrected in Justice League and looked to have a bright future ahead of him, other than making a neck-down cameo appearance in Shazam!, there’s been no movement on Kal-El’s cinematic future.

Naturally one way he could return is in Man of Steel 2, and at one point Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn was reportedly in talks to helm that sequel. However, Vaughn has now said that the movie is “officially” no longer happening.

That doesn’t bode well for Henry Cavill’s future as Superman, as it was reported (but not officially confirmed) last year that he was hanging up the red cape. However, Vaughn did provide some details on what his Man of Steel 2 would have looked like, and it borrowed elements from the Superman movie he pitched in 2008.

As Matthew Vaughn explained to Polygon, Matthew Vaughn and comic book heavyweight Mark Millar came to Warner Bros in 2008 with an idea for a cinematic Superman story that would launch a trilogy which would have been, as Millar once called it, “a massive, uplifting, hopeful thing.” But Vaughn’s Superman movie also would have been incredibly different than what’s come before, as it sees Kal-El growing up on Krypton.

The first movie of this proposed trilogy would have taken place almost entirely on Krypton and focused on Jor-El and Krypton’s impending destruction. However, these events would have happened later in the timeline, allowing Kal-El to reach adulthood on Krypton, learn about Earth there and then have to reckon with his loyalty to both planets.

Given how Man of Steel began with the more traditional Superman origin story, with Kal-El being sent off Krypton as an infant and the planet exploding soon after, then obviously a Matthew Vaughn-directed Man of Steel 2 couldn’t have been a direct adaptation of his Superman pitch from last decade and still fit within DCEU continuity. So unless the plan was for this movie to be set outside that franchise, I’m curious about what ideas Vaughn would have carried over.

Perhaps Man of Steel 2 would have seen Superman departing Earth and going on an adventure elsewhere in the galaxy, as the DCEU has yet to deeply delve into its cosmic roots yet. Henry Cavill had expressed interest in having Brainiac be Man of Steel 2’s main villain, and in the modern era, he’s usually connected to Krypton’s history. That said, perhaps taking that kind of creative approach would have resulted in Man of Steel 2 feeling too similar to the Syfy series Krypton.

In any case, Matthew Vaughn directing Man of Steel 2 didn’t work out, although he’s not opposed to the idea of still working in the DC Comics realm, saying “it’d be hard to say no” if he was given the opportunity to direct a new Superman movie. At one point Mission: Impossible - Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie was also in consideration to helm Man of Steel 2, but that also fell through.

So for now, Superman is still sitting on the proverbial shelf, and we’ll have to wait and see if Henry Cavill ever gets to play him again or if a new actor will don the ’S’ shield, whether it be in a DCEU-set movie or a standalone story. For now, you can keep up to date with what the DCEU has coming down the pipeline with our handy guide.

4 Months After People Walk Out Of Holmes And Watson In Theaters, It's Topping DVD Rentals

4 Months After People Walk Out Of Holmes And Watson In Theaters, It's Topping DVD Rentals
Will Ferrell and John C Reilly in Holmes and Watson

Last Christmas was a great period for films. We had superhero adventures like Aquaman and the amazing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. There were beautiful family movies like Mary Poppins Returns and even Bumblebee. However, one movie that did not belong in this category was the Will Ferrell/John C. Reilly comedy Holmes and Watson.

Based on both the reviews and the box office, Holmes and Watson was a travesty of a movie, one of the worst in recent memory that had viewers literally walking out of the theater before it was over. And yet, four months later, the film is now at the top of the rental charts.

Movie rental company Redbox has released its rental charts for the week ending April 14, and quite surprisingly, Holmes and Watson finds itself at the top of the charts when it comes to physical disc rentals, and in the number two slot for digital rentals, behind Clint Eastwood's The Mule.

Holmes and Watson was something of an epic flop. Quite frequently, a movie that is panned by critics is still able to put up some decent numbers at the box office, but that wasn't the case here. The film holds an 11% rating on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes and has an only slightly better 27% score from the general audience.

Not only did a lot of people who saw it not love it, but not all that many people actually saw it. The film only made $30 million domestically and barely broke $40 million globally, on a reported budget of $42 million. The film was officially a box office flop, though it's possible the movie might be able to find its way to breaking even thanks to rental numbers.

Clearly, those who did not bother to go see Holmes and Watson on the big screen are willing to give it a shot with a rental. Redbox physical rentals can cost less than $2, which means if you pick up something you don't like, you're not out much.

Rentals in general are done by people who want to give a look to something that they missed in theaters. While the Redbox top 10s published by Media Play News do include those bigger films like Aquaman and Bumblebee, the lists are largely populated by movies that didn't make a smash, like Second Act, and Instant Family, in addition to The Mule and Holmes and Watson.

Of course, it has to be said that just because people are renting Holmes and Watson, doesn't mean any more people are actually liking it than they did the first time around. It's also hard to say how many people are actually watching it. Physical DVD rental may not be dead, but we have no idea how many people in absolute numbers are actually taking the time to go to a kiosk to rent it.

Still for a movie like Holmes and Watson, any good news should be celebrated.
