John Wick Chapter 3 Has Screened, See What People Are Saying

John Wick Chapter 3 Has Screened, See What People Are Saying
Keanu reeves and Halle Berry with dogs in John Wick Chapter 3

The John Wick franchise is one that has built up a lot of fans over the previous two films, and now those fans are excitedly looking forward to what one expects to be the end of a trilogy, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum. While the rest of us pour bastards still have to wait a couple of weeks, the movie has screened for some critics, and they're now letting us know that if you were a fan of the first two films, you're probably going to like John Wick: Chapter 3.

CinemaBlend's own Mike Reyes was one of those lucky enough to get an early view of John Wick: Chapter 3, and he thought the film took its trademark stunts and highly stylized action to another level. It also, quite interestingly, still leaves the franchise in a place that it could go forward. According to Mike...

John Wick 3 is yet another round of kick assed action, and intriguing world building. Keanu Reeves continues to clean up & the stunt bar has been raised yet again. There are so many places this franchise could go from here, and all of them are exciting.

One of the most interesting parts of the John Wick films is the way the franchise has created its world of organized professional assassins, but done so with a limited amount of expository dialogue. Most of what we know about the world John Wick lives in, the Continental hotel, and the High Table all comes from watching these elements simply be introduced. We learn about them by the way characters react to them, rather than having them explained.

It seems that the world will still leave itself open to more stories, whether John Wick himself could be part of those stories, we'll have to wait and see.

One way that the franchise could potentially continue, apparently, is through the new character introduced in John Wick: Chapter 3 that is played by Halle Berry. Erik Davis of Fandango thinks she needs her own film series. He also thinks the new film is the best of the trilogy.

Finally allowed to say that John Wick 3 is hands down the best of the three movies. Ridiculously inventive fight scenes, lots more world building & great villains. There is a knife fight in this movie that is aces. Also, Halle Berry’s character needs her own series.

In addition to the John Wick films creative world building, the franchise is also defined by its practical stunts and beautifully choreographed action sequences. Courtney Howard says that John Wick 3 elevates both elements.

John Wick 3: A eye-popping, jaw-dropping, show-stopping killer. Extends world-building dynamics beautifully, but also assigns meaningful resonance to character-driven action. Keanu Reeves is perfect, Asia Kate Dillon is magnetic & Halle Berry kicks ass.

Not bad for a franchise that was all started by a dog. The first film saw John Wick, a retired professional hitman, run afoul of some thugs who proceed to beat him up, steal his car, and kill his dog. This brings him out of retirement to hunt down those responsible.

However, his decision to come back results in him needing to make good on a marker he owed before going underground. John Wick: Chapter 2, follows Wick as he does this, but when Wick makes the decision to break the rules of the underworld that he lives in, he finds a price on his head and a lot of people trying to collect. That's where John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum picks up.

Assuming that the complete reviews come in as glowing as these social media reactions, John Wick will be the rare movie trilogy that sees its entire franchise getting stellar reviews. Scott Mendelson from Forbes is another who praises the new movie, though, unlike some, he doesn't necessarily think the third movie is the best.

Oh, and John Wick 3 is another gorgeous and inventive action extravaganza. I think JW2 is a "better" movie, but this one is completely entertaining and a living video game. Keanu Reeves is once again a force of nature. He actually looks his age, which adds to the pathos.

So basically, if there was any question, if you're looking forward to watching Keanu Reeves kick ass. John Wick 3 delivers. As Slashfilm's Hoai-Tran Bui, puts it, the movie rules.

Pure visceral cinema. After the dramatic world expansion of Chapter 2, Chapter 3 returns to a leaner, exhilarating story chock full of breathless, bone-crunching action and even a few laughs. I was sweating 30 minutes in. This movie RULES.

Is there anything wrong with John Wick 3? IGN's Terri Schwartz admits that some of the decisions perplexed her, but that the problems were far from big enough to impact her enjoyment of the film, saying...

Some of the storytelling and character decisions left me scratching my head and questioning motivations when I left the theater, but that won't stop me from going back for the inevitable John Wick: Chapter 4.

In addition, Mike Rougeau from IGN says that some of the additions to the mythology don't necessarily work, and some of it might actually be controversial for fans.

John Wick 3 continues to build on the series' mythology and has some of the coolest action and most memorable side characters of the entire series. I'm not sure about everything it adds, and certain things will be controversial.

Overall, it looks like John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum is going to be everything that fans have been waiting for. Based on the fact that most movie franchises these days are trilogies, we certainly may have expected the story to end with Chapter 3, though based on some of these comments, it sounds like the franchise may not be quite through yet.

I for one am certainly looking forward to John Wick: Chapter 3, it's probably my favorite modern action franchise. I find both of the previous films endlessly rewatchable and if the new movie is added to that list so much the better.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum opens wide on Friday May 17.

Chris Pratt Really Didn’t Want To Audition For Guardians Of The Galaxy

Chris Pratt Really Didn’t Want To Audition For Guardians Of The Galaxy
Chris Pratt as Star-Lord

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a massive place, with a ton of franchises and endless heroic characters to follow. But certain properties stand out among the rest as fan favorites, and James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely one of those. The movies follow a motley crew of misfits, featuring an all-star cast including Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, and Chris Pratt.

But it turns out that Chris Pratt wasn't always keen to play Peter Quill/Star-Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, he initially refused to audition for Marvel Studios, making the casting process a complicated one. Marvel casting director Sarah Finn recently recounted this at the Avengers: Endgame premiere, when asked about which Marvel blockbuster was the hardest to cast.

They're all challenging in their own ways, but I'd probably go with Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn has been very generous about this in saying that I, to the point of annoying him, kept insisting that Chris Pratt was the guy for the part, but Chris didn't want to play the part and refused to audition.

Well, this is surprising. Chris Pratt seems like the perfect choice to be Star-Lord, given his mixture of comedy and action experience. But the Parks & Rec alum was originally hesitant to join the franchise, so it took some convincing.

While moviegoers know just how successful the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise grew to be, there was no guarantee it would resonate so well with audiences before its 2014 debut. The characters were not household names, and the team included a giant talking tree and a foul mouthed raccoon. Chris Pratt can't be faulted for having some trepidation, before finally agreeing to meet with Sarah Finn and the folks at Marvel.

But once Chris Pratt agreed to read for Star-Lord, Sarah Finn still had to convince James Gunn. As she mentioned in her same interview with Variety,

I finally got him to audition and James Gunn said he didn't want to see him and that really was a challenge. I was really happy when I finally got them together and it was honestly one of those eureka moments that we talk about in casting when it absolutely feels right and you know it's right. James turned to me within ten seconds and said 'He's the guy.'

To me, it sounds like Sarah Finn gets the credit for casting Chris Pratt because she deserves it. The casting director clearly saw something special about Pratt's talents and the lone human Guardian, and it's a decision that seems to have paid off. Pratt has gone on to perform the part in three Marvel blockbusters, and is expected to reprise his role in Avengers: Endgame.

While there was some pullback from both Chris Pratt and James Gunn, eventually the director saw Pratt read as Peter Quill. And almost instantly, he realized that was the right guy all along. Why don't casting directors get Oscar attention, again?

Ultimately Chris Pratt's Star-Lord debuted when Guardians of the Galaxy hit theaters in 2014, and became a summer hit that grossed a whopping $773.3 million. The cast reunited for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in 2017, which made even more money at the box office and was another critical darling. Pratt leads the cast and gets top billing, and the sequel was largely focused on his relationship with father Ego (Kurt Russell).

Star-Lord and the rest of the Guardians (including newcomer Mantis) were handed over to The Russo Brothers for Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, which let them finally crossover with the greater MCU. They brought in a breathe of fresh air to the ultra-serious Infinity War, and their interactions with Thor and Iron Man didn't disappoint.

They had a major role in the multiple stories, proving how popular and essential the Guardians have become since Chris Pratt auditioned and landed the role of Star-Lord. Gamora was the key to the Soul Stone, while Rocket and Groot helped Thor get his new weapon Stormbreaker. Meanwhile, the rest of the Guardians and Nebula faced Thanos on Titan.

Related: Why The Soul Stone Was Very Important To Avengers: Infinity War’s Script, According To The Writers

Star-Lord's action ultimately helped Thanos' victory, and stopped the team on Titan from beating the big purple guy. When the Mad Titan was briefly incapacitated, Nebula revealed that Gamora was dead, as her sister wasn't there with him. In a fit of rage he punched Josh Brolin's villain, and broke Mantis' concentration in the process. Thanos came to, and made quick work of the heroes with his full power.

It should be interesting to see how Star-Lord factors into Avengers: Endgame. Rocket and Nebula were the only characters to be spared from Thanos' wrath, and the two characters will likely lean on each other in the upcoming blockbuster. Most moviegoers assume the dusted characters will somehow be resurrected, with the newest Endgame trailers indicating the survivors will try to wield the stones themselves.

Some type of resurrection is going to be needed in order for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to come to fruition. Star-Lord, Rocket, Drax, and Mantis all got dusted thanks to Thanos. So if The Decimation is reversed, the team should be in much better shape. But the big question is what will happen to Gamora. Rather than dying from the snap, she was murdered by Thanos in order to procure the Soul Stone on Vormir. Is there any hope for her?

While it may have been a long road, Chris Pratt's casting as Star-Lord is inspired, and the actor and James Gunn seem to have a good working relationship. This collaboration will continue for Guardians 3, now that Gunn has been officially rehired by Disney to helm the threequel. But first things first: the Guardians and Avengers need to tend to Thanos.

Star-Lord faded to dust in Avengers: Infinity War, and the character is expected to somehow be revived and pop up in Endgame. In the meantime, fill out CinemaBlend's Endgame death pool, and be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Zachary Levi Explains How Uncomfortable His Shazam! Costume Was

Zachary Levi Explains How Uncomfortable His Shazam! Costume Was
shazam zachary levi

We all know that superheroes look cool. I mean, would the whole superhero thing even have caught on back in the day if the characters who filled comic books looked like high school science teachers while they were battling supervillains? I think not. We need those crazy tight, multi-colored and sometimes unnecessarily revealing costumes to set our heroes and every arch nemesis apart from the rest of us regular folk. What this tends to mean, though, especially in the modern age of comic book-based movies, where every super suit is less of a stretchy spandex affair and more of a protective, tactical outfit, is that the actors who get the great opportunity to bring our favorites to the big screen have to put up with some less than comfortable costumes for several hours a day.

Unfortunately for Shazam! star Zachary Levi, his upcoming turn as the many-powered hero was also befallen by this common superhero movie issue. And, he's more than willing to tell us all just how inconvenient this particular aspect of his character was, especially when certain necessary...functions come into play.

It's what everybody says, it's the inconvenience of when you need to go to the bathroom. Yeah, because in order for it to look great, you have to have it kind of be seamless. You can't have a bunch of zippers and things everywhere, unless you're like Deadpool, I guess. He had a bunch of zippers.

Man, being an actor starring in a big budget superhero movie is tough work. Honestly, though, with all the advancements that have been made in technology over the past few decades, are you really telling me that there's no way to get an easy open / easy close pee hole into these supersuits that is also easily hidden? So, we can all get together and de-age Samuel L. Jackson realistically and create entire awesome looking characters out of CGI, but we can't give our actors a semi-quick way to use the potty? What is this world coming to?

I cannot imagine how distracting it would be to need to go to the bathroom and have to enlist a team of helpers to get me at that all important goal. Plus, just the time needed to get supersuit things undone, moved over, slid down or to get tubing added or a bedpan inserted (don't yell at me, I don't know how they do these things) must be insane. Who among us has not been busy and waited until the last minute to finally head over to pee and poo factory? Just think about having to call a team together an hour before you actually think you might have to use the bathroom to get the process started in time so that you don't have an embarrassing accident all over your $1 million superhero costume. Just take the cost out of my salary, David F. Sandberg!

I do like the idea of a superhero costume that has zippers, snaps, buttons or just plain holes everywhere. Though, now that I think about it, strategically placed holes would probably be an issue that would make the MPAA faint, so, maybe Zachary Levi and I should leave the costume design to the experts.

Speaking of Deadpool, as Levi did when he spoke with Comicbook, he doesn't actually have a bunch of zippers on his costume, which may be one of the reasons that star Ryan Reynolds has referred to his costume as "a big, red body condom," and colorfully admitted to being able to "taste" his own genitals when he wears it. What can I say? Sounds like an interesting day at work that Reynolds will, at least, never forget.

Even more recently, we heard Aquaman star Jason Momoa discuss a similar issue with his official suit, saying that "if you have the poopsies, it is very challenging," and noting that being able to hold it is a valuable skill. He later claimed it was just a joke, but, come on, Momoa, we know you were just trying to regain some of your sense of sexy mystery that was undone by using the word "poopsies" in public. It's OK, friend. We're here for you.

While Zachary Levi also had other comfort issues with his Shazam! suit, he does seem to understand just how big of a deal it is to get to be able to bring a superhero to life on the big screen for the first time, and is more than willing to step into his "second skin" again if he gets the chance.

It's just the overall kind of uncomfortability sometimes of wearing essentially a massive spandex adult size onesie. It's super tight, it becomes kind of like a second skin, I would overheat in it. I would freeze in it. The electronics in it would be a dance sometimes. But all of that, whatever, I'll take all of that times ten if I get to do this again. If I get to be the guy to wear the suit, I'll take the lumps, I'll do it.

By all accounts so far, Zachary Levi did a great job of not letting any of the problems with his superhero suit show on screen, and we can all be thankful for that. You can watch him try not to pee when Shazam! rolls into theaters on April 5.

Avengers: Endgame’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Super High, Because Of Course

Avengers: Endgame’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Super High, Because Of Course
Avengers: Endgame poster

Avengers Endgame is the culmination of over 10 years and almost two dozen films. It's an epic by any definition of the word. However, as it turns out, it's also a really good movie. The movie hasn't even hit the general public yet, but review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes has already certified the movie as "Fresh" as, with over 120 reviews counted, Endgame has an impressive 97% positive score.

For the record, that breaks down to 117 positive reviews, and four negative ones. The average rating comes out to 8.23 out of 10, making the movie about a B/B- which is pretty damn good all things considered. While all the reviews might not be totally perfect scores, they are overwhelmingly positive.

Of course, CinemaBlend's own review, which is counted among those Rotten Tomatoes scores, is overwhelmingly positive. Our own Eric Eisenberg game the film a perfect five star review, calling the film "one of the most ambitious, entertaining, emotional, and stunning blockbusters we’ve ever seen."

If you're curious, Avengers: Infinity War ended up with an 85% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes, though it ended up with almost four times the number of reviews that Endgame currently has, so we'll have to wait and see if it can hold this number after even more people publish their reviews going into opening weekend.

The 97% score currently ties Endgame with Black Panther as the highest rated Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. The MCU has always done pretty well with critics. Only two of the 22 films have scores below the "Certified Fresh" threshold, and both Thor: The Dark World and The Incredible Hulk still ended up with two-thirds of reviews being more positive than negative.

Rotten Tomatoes is given a lot of credit for swaying public opinion when it comes to films. A bad score on the site is frequently blamed for movies performing poorly at the box office. Exactly how much that matters is a topic of debate. There are, however, many movies that are viewed as "critic proof" films with enough fan interest that they were going to be successful regardless of what critics thought. Avengers: Endgame is almost certainly one of those movies.

Avengers: Infinity War became one of the high grossing films of all-time and the fans who went to that movie, never mind the other 20 Marvel Cinematic Universe films, are going to show up this weekend to see how it all ends. Even if the reviews had not been stellar, that was going to be the case. The positive notices are just icing on the cake.

At the end of the day, critics are still just people watching a movie, and those people seemed to really like it. Tomorrow, even more people will begin to see the film and we'll see what the real response to Avengers:Endgame actually is.

Doctor Sleep: An Updated Cast List

Doctor Sleep: An Updated Cast List
Ewan McGregor Christopher Robin

The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep has wrapped production and it won't be long until the world gets to see the next chapter of a story that's been lauded with high acclaim over the years. The legacy of Stephen King's novel and its adaptation by Stanley Kubrick will ensure many eyes are on Doctor Sleep when it hits theaters.

Though audiences today seem to love a Stephen King adaptation, it's understandable if Doctor Sleep's development got lost among the sea of various projects currently in the works in Hollywood. For those who don't know, this movie has a cast to be excited about, so hop on down below and see who all is involved, and what roles they'll be playing in this latest adaptation. First up here's Danny!

Ewan McGregor As Danny Torrance

Iconic actor Ewan McGregor is stepping into the shoes of Danny Torrance decades after the events in The Shining. Danny is now Dan, and while he's survived his childhood, he's inherited some of his father's worst traits in adulthood. Dan eventually conquers his demons, and uses his regained psychic abilities to comfort patients. This earned him the nickname of "Doctor Sleep," and eventually intertwines his fate with that of a girl with powers similar to his.

Rebecca Ferguson As Rose The Hat

Mission: Impossible Fallout and The Girl On The Train actress Rebecca Ferguson is back in Doctor Sleep, and playing a very important role opposite of McGregor's Dan. Rose The Hat is the leader of a group called The True Knot, which is comprised of a group of individuals with unique abilities. Without getting too deep into spoilers, this group is bad news and will cause some problems for Danny boy in the movie.

Kyliegh Curran As Abra Stone

Kyliegh Curran is a relative newcomer to Hollywood set to take on a key role in Doctor Sleep. Curran plays Abra Stone, a young girl who psychically links with Dan and, unfortunately, becomes aware of The True Knot. With the group setting her in its crosshairs, Dan will do all he can in order to protect the girl? Will he succeed? Remember this is a Stephen King work, so the safety of children is never guaranteed.

Bruce Greenwood As Dr. John Dalton

Not long after he played a key supporting role in the Stephen King adaptation of Gerald's Game, Bruce Greenwood is again a part of the author's film universe in Doctor Sleep. Greenwood portrays Dr. John Dalton, one of the people in the novel to whom Dan first reveals his connection with Abra. The quiet intensity Greenwood can bring to roles is great for King works in general, so he should be an excellent addition to the cast.

Zahn McClarnon As Crow Daddy

Zahn McClarnon was a great enforcer in FX's Fargo, so it's no surprise he's found his way into Doctor Sleep as another dangerous man to look out for. McClarnon plays Crow Daddy, right hand man to Rose The Hand and lover in the novels. Given this work is supposed to be a faithful novel adaptation, there's no reason to believe that will change.

Emily Alyn Lind As Snakebite Andi

If that character name wasn't any indication, Emily Alyn Lind's Snakebite Andi is a member of the The True Knot who will cause some problems for Dan and Abra. Like them and other members of The True Knot, she has a unique ability she can use on others to lull them to sleep. With an ability like that, are we sure Danny is the one who should have that nickname?

Carl Lumbly As Dick Halloran

Prolific film and television actor Carl Lumbly is a part of Doctor Sleep, and will step into the shoes of another character that was around during The Shining. For those who don't recognize the name Dick Halloran, he was the Overlook's chef who also had abilities. Dick has actually appeared as a character in quite a few Stephen King works over the years, so it's possible other nods to King works could happen via him.

Alex Essoe As Wendy Torrance

Alex Essoe will play the role of Wendy Torrance, a role made iconic by Shelley Duvall. The actress is involved in Doctor Sleep's moments in the past, so she'll probably be seen with Dick Halloran. I'm assuming she'll be in scenes with a young Danny Torrance as well. Essoe bears a resemblance to Duvall, and I'd personally love to see one or two of The Shining's iconic scenes recreated in a dream or something just to compare the two performances.

Jocelin Donahue

Jocelin Donahue is no stranger to horror films, and has been in features such as Insidious: Chapter 2, The House of The Devil and others. Donahue's role has not been officially announced, although there are some sites out there listing her role as the mother of Abra, Lucy. Provided that's legitimate, that's a big character who will help bridge the gap between the original film and the sequel.

Jacob Tremblay

One of Hollywood's most in-demand and talented child actors is involved in Doctor Sleep, and will be playing a mystery role. Many have speculated Tremblay will play a young Danny Torrance, which wouldn't be surprising considering that's who 90% of Americans would cast in the role if we were fantasy casting for a reboot of The Shining. If Tremblay does end up playing Danny, let's hope he does at least one finger wag and "redrum" for nostalgia's sake.

*Zackary Momoh *

Seven Seconds standout Zackary Momoh has been added to Doctor Sleep in a role that has yet to be revealed. With his role undefined, there's really no clear guess as to who he may be playing. Whoever he's playing, expect an emotional performance and this role to potentially be the start of a much larger career in Hollywood.

*Carel Struycken *

Famous character actor Carel Struycken is a part of Doctor Sleep, with some outlets alleging he'll play the role of Grandpa Flick. In Doctor Sleep, Flick gets his nickname for being the oldest member of The True Knot. His presence more or less is the catalyst for the The True Knot to spring into action, although his role is ultimately not that large.

As mentioned, Doctor Sleep has wrapped production, and is expected in theaters November 8. For more on the film, be sure to read up on Ewan McGregor's thoughts on the project, and the one person he's hoping is pleased with he and the cast's effort.

Morbius: What We Know So Far About Sony's Venom Follow-Up

Morbius: What We Know So Far About Sony's Venom Follow-Up
Morbius the Living Vampire

The Spider-Man mythology is currently being cinematically represented on three fronts. Tom Holland’s version of the Web-Slinger is still battling the forces of evil within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and in December 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was marked the first entry in a new animated franchise that’s already given the green light to a sequel and spinoff. And then there’s Sony’s live action Marvel universe, which doesn’t actually feature Spider-Man, but instead highlights some of his villains and allies.

Venom kicked off this particular franchise in October 2018, and while it wasn’t a critical hit, it was a commercial heavy hitter. Next up is Morbius, starring Morbius the Living Vampire, who’s been a frequent Spider-Man foe and occasional ally in the comics since 1971. We’re still a ways off from Morbius hitting theaters, but a decent amount of information has already come out that put together a loose picture of what to expect. So, let’s go over what’s been revealed about Morbius so far.

When Is Morbius’ Release Date?

Following Venom’s successful theatrical run, Sony didn’t waste any time putting Morbius on the calendar. Originally, the studio scheduled the movie for July 10, 2020, the same day that the new Ghostbusters movie is opening. But in early January 2019, Sony moved Morbius down to July 31 of the same year, and for right now, it has that opening weekend all to itself. That’ll likely change at some point, but because Morbius is opening towards the end of the summer movie season rather than in the middle of it, presumably that means it stands a better chance of drawing in audiences, since various other blockbusters will already have had their time to shine.

That said, Morbius is sandwiched between Disney’s Jungle Cruise, opening on July 24, and a still-to-be-revealed Warner Bros. event film, so it’s not like it’ll be all smooth sailing for Morbius. Although, at least where Jungle Cruise is concerned, Sony also has a still-to-be-revealed animation movie coming out that same weekend, so it’ll still be able to divert some money from Disney’s coffers into its own.

What Will Morbius Be Rated?

If you study Morbius’ comic book history and the fact that Spider-Man won’t be showing up in the upcoming movie, you’d think it’d be a great fit for an R rating. After all, this is a character that can thrive in a more violent setting and has that horror vibe built into its bones. Well, that’s what people thought about Venom too, and look how that turned out. For right now, we don’t know what Morbius will be rated, and that information won’t be announced to the public until a couple of months before release.

Maybe Sony will go the distance and deliver a no-holds barred Morbius movie that warrants an R rating. However, because of how successful Venom was and the fact that these two movies are set in the same universe, I suspect Sony will play it safe and aim for Morbius to be classified as PG-13. While we’ve seen sometimes that R-rated comic book movies can still haul in a lot of money (Deadpool 2 holds the record), it’s logical to assume that Morbius will have a better chance at financial success by going the PG-13 route and drawing in both adults and older kids to see it in theaters.

Who’s Directing Morbius?

In June 2018, approximately seven months after it was announced to the public that a Morbius the Living Vampire movie was in the works, word came in, after Antoine Fuqua and F. Gary Gray turned down the opportunity, that Swedish filmmaker Daniel Espinosa had been tapped to direct Morbius. After making a splash in Sweden with his 2010 movie Easy Money, he made the jump to the American film scene with Safe House and Child 44. Then his relationship with Sony began with Life, the movie that used Spider-Man 3 footage.

Life earned mixed reviews and only made a little over $100 million off a budget between $58-62 million, but it did show that Daniel Espinosa can work within the sci-fi horror realm, and that’s presumably how he ended up getting Morbius. Well, that and the fact that Jared Leto (more on him in a little bit) met with Espinosa about directing Morbius, which also convinced Leto that this was a movie worth starring in.

We’ll have to wait and see how Morbius turns out under Daniel Espinosa’s direction, but it definitely helps that he already has some horror experience under his belt rather than this being his first time working within the genre. While the chances of Morbius making Venom levels of money are slim, fingers crossed that Espinosa and his team can deliver a movie that will appeal to Marvel fans and general audiences alike.

What Will Morbius Be About?

As of right now, no specific Morbius plot details have been made available to the public yet. However, it’s expected to stick relatively closely to the source material and hit the same basic beats for his origin story, albeit without Spider-Man.

For those unfamiliar with Morbius the Living Vampire, he was originally a Nobel Prize-winning biologist named Michael Morbius who suffered from a rare blood condition. Desperate to cure his condition, Michael gave himself an experimental treatment involving electroshock therapy and vampire bat DNA. This treatment did successfully cure his blood condition, but the tradeoff was something much worse: being afflicted with “pseudo-vampirism,” requiring him to ingest blood in order to survive and becoming weakened by light. For all intents and purposes, he’d turned into a vampire

Although Morbius has definitely been a tragic character since the beginning, like Venom, he was initially depicted as a straightforward super villain for Spider-Man. However, he’s also followed in Venom’s footsteps by evolving into more of an anti-hero who fights monsters (including other vampires) and villains who are truly malevolent. When he’s on this path, he only drinks the blood of those he deems guilty.

Morbius’ powers include superhuman strength, durability and speed; hypnotism; and an accelerated healing factor. Aside from his aversion to light, he also doesn’t have the same weaknesses that a traditional vampire does, like garlic and silver. It’s also been shown that drinking Spider-Man’s irradiated blood causes Morbius’ condition to fade away for a while, though since the Web-Slinger isn’t appearing in this upcoming movie, the cinematic Morbius won’t have that to fall back on.

Outside of the comics, Morbius the Living Vampire has most notably appeared in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, where the character sucked “plasma” out of his victims using suckers on his palms. Morbius was also teased in an alternate ending for Blade, and while, originally, writer David S. Goyer intended for him to be the villain in a Blade sequel, the finalized Blade II ended up adapting the Reaper storyline instead.

Jared Leto

Following his turn as The Joker in Suicide Squad (a role we’re still not sure he’s going to reprise in the DC Extended Universe), Jared Leto is now making the jump to Marvel by playing Michael Morbius. As mentioned earlier, Leto didn’t sign onto Morbius right away; it was only after he met with Daniel Espinosa in Germany while he was on tour with his band 30 Seconds to Mars that the actor finally decided to move from “loosely attached” to the project to fully committing to it.

We have yet to see how Jared Leto’s Morbius will look in vampire form, but the actor has posted a few looks of himself portraying the character on set. One picture has his face mostly obscured by a clapperboard, but there’s a sickly look to his eyes that could mean this is when Michael Morbius is still fully human and suffering from his blood condition. Then there was a gif of Morbius wearing a hooded jacket and standing in the middle of a crowded street; I’m guessing this takes place shortly after he’s stricken with vampirism as he still looks like a normal human.

Adria Arjona

Michael Morbius wasn’t alone when he created the treatment for his blood condition. He was working alongside his fiancée, [Martine Bancroft](https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/MartineBancroft(Earth-616), who Adria Arjona will be playing in the movie. She has built quite the resume in her relatively short acting career, appearing in movies like The Belko Experiment, Pacific Rim Uprising and Triple Frontier, as well as starring in TV shows like True Detective and Emerald City.

After he became a vampire, Morbius tried desperately to find a cure so that he could protect Martine, but he was unsuccessful and their relationship collapsed. Years later, Martine was killed by Doctor Langford after she discovered he was trying to kill Morbius, but her death was avenged when Morbius slew Langford. However, in typical comic book fashion, Martine would later be resurrected as a vampire, though she would eventually meet her second demise.

It’s hard to say just what kind of relationship Michael Morbius and Martine Bancroft will have in Morbius. There’s a good chance it’s still romantic, but they might not be engaged like they were in the comics. It’s also unclear if Martine will transform into a vampire, although given that Venom gave us a little bit of Michelle Williams’ Ann Weying as She-Venom, anything is possible.

Matt Smith

He’ll arguably always be best known for playing the Eleventh Doctor on Doctor Who, but Matt Smith’s career hasn’t faltered since he left the TARDIS. On the big screen, he’s appeared in Terminator Genisys and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (he says he will NOT be in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), and he’s kept his small screen run going with The Crown. For Morbius, he’ll be playing the role of Loxias Crown, the main villain.

Those of you familiar with the comics won’t recognize that name. That’s because Loxias Crown is a version of the baddie [Hunger](https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Hunger(Crown) (Earth-616), a.k.a. Crown, who was introduced in 1997’s _Spider-Man #76. Like Morbius, he was a vampire-like being who fought both our eponymous protagonist and Spider-Man, and was also a former HYDRA agent. However, the Morbius movie’s version will have a much different backstory, as Smith’s Loxias Crown is Michael Morbius’ friend who shares the same rare blood condition.

We don’t know anything beyond that, but one can infer that somehow, either through the same treatment Michael Morbius used or a different source, Loxias Crown will also become a vampiric being and use his powers to attack his former friend for some perceived slight.

Jared Harris

Even if you don’t recognize his name, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Jared Harris in at least one thing, if not several. From Mr. Deeds and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows to Fringe and Mad Men, Harris has an accomplished resume of movie and TV work. Like Matt Smith, he also recently appeared on The Crown, and nowadays he can be seen playing Francis Cozier on The Terror.

All we know so far about Jared Harris’ Morbius character is that he’s Michael Morbius’ mentor. Rumor has it that this could be Emil Nikos, which would be interesting, because in the comics, Nikos is Michael Morbius’ best friend, a position being occupied by Loxias Crown on the big screen. If Harris is indeed playing Nikos, that could mean we don’t spend that much time with him, because Nikos was also Morbius’ first victim when he became a vampire.

That said, since rumor has it Morbius’ Emil Nikos will be much different from his comic book counterpart, perhaps this means his fate won’t be the same either. And even if he is killed, Nikos was resurrected as a vampire in the comics, so Harris’ version could follow suit. If that were to happen, though, I suspect that by the time Morbius has concluded, Nikos would be dead again, this time permanently.

Tyrese Gibson

Tyrese Gibson is no stranger to blockbuster work, as he’s best known on the acting side of his career for playing Roman Pierce in the Fast & Furious movies and Robert Epps in the Transformers movies. For years, he’s expressed interest in playing Green Lantern in the DC Extended Universe, and while there’s still no indication that’s going to happen, he’s finally made the jump to the comic book realm with Morbius.

It was initially reported that Tyrese Gibson is playing an FBI agent hunting Michael Morbius, and Gibson later identified his character as “Agent Stroud.” That means that Gibson is portraying Simon Stroud, who, in the comics, was a CIA agent-turned-mercenary who hunted down Morbius and fellow monster Man-Wolf, the alter ego of J. Jonah Jameson’s son, John. Whether Stroud’s pursuit of Morbius is strictly business or a more personal mission remains to be seen, but one would imagine he’ll be a hindrance for most of the movie, though that doesn’t discount the possibility of him becoming an ally later down the line.

Gibson also reportedly signed a three-picture deal when he joined Morbius, so if the movie gets a sequel or two, expect Gibson’s Stroud to be back. On the other hand, since Morbius is part of a shared universe, maybe Stroud could return in Venom 2 or a different installment in the Sony Marvel Universe, thus having him fill a similar role to the one Phil Coulson had in Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That’s all we know for now about Morbius, but stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates about the project as they roll in. For now, you can keep track of what’s heading to theaters this year by looking through our 2019 release schedule.

James Gunn Had A Really Good Time Writing The Suicide Squad

James Gunn Had A Really Good Time Writing The Suicide Squad
Deadshot and Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad

Within the span of eight months, James Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and then rehired onto the threeequel. During that span of time, he was selected by Warner Bros to write and direct The Suicide Squad, and even now that he’s back on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gun will still be overseeing Task Force X’s next cinematic adventure.

While we’re still a ways from seeing James Gunn’s take on the Suicide Squad in the DC Extended Universe, apparently he didn’t suffer from writer’s block when penning the story, calling it one of his best writing experiences in a while. In Gunn’s words:

The Suicide Squad, it just instantly started flowing. I don’t think I’ve had as much fun writing a script since maybe Dawn of the Dead. That’s what this whole movie has been like.

Just so we’re all on the same page, the Dawn of the Dead remake came out in 2004, and James Gunn wrote the script the year prior. So The Suicide Squad marks the most fun he’s had writing a script in over a decade and a half! That ideally bodes well for The Suicide Squad’s quality, though understandably, Gunn did not provide any specifics on what to expect from the movie while speaking with Deadline.

While 2016’s Suicide Squad, which was written and directed by Fury’s David Ayer, was unquestionably a commercial success, making nearly $747 million worldwide, it didn’t fare well on the critical side of the spectrum. With Ayer initially stepping away from directing Suicide Squad 2 to helm Gotham City Sirens (he’s since kept busy with Bright, its upcoming sequel and The Tax Collector), that opened the door for a new creative mind to put their own stamp on the Suicide Squad mythology, a doorway which James Gunn stepped through once his time at Marvel Studios looked like it was done for good.

Although it was initially described as a g The Suicide Squad will have ties to its predecessor, as evidenced by the return of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. That said, rather than being a traditional sequel, The Suicide Squad is being framed as more of a ‘relaunch,’ which undoubtedly allowed James Gunn more creative freedom.

One of the ways The Suicide Squad will distinguish itself is by featuring a lot of new faces. Idris Elba will play someone who’s not Deadshot, David Dastamalchian will play Polka-Dot Man and Daniela Melchior will play Ratcatcher, while John Cena is in talks to play Peacemaker. King Shark will also reportedly be a member of this new Suicide Squad, although Michael Rooker has denied that he will voice the character.

The Suicide Squad charges into theaters on August 5, 2021, and production is slated to begin this fall. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for updates on its progression, and don’t forget to look through our DC movies guide to learn what else the DCEU has coming up.
